Aryan Guard- Calgary Neo- Nazi Skinheads Project

with 19 comments

This has been a project that I have been working on since last April. They are a group of neo-nazi skinheads in Calgary. They have been organizing and growing over the last few years.

They hold a yearly march through the streets of downtown Calgary, where they are met with opposition from anti-racist groups.

I will be working on this story more during the spring, focusing on the their ideas and growth of their group in the Calgary community.

View their website here.

  3. Good picture, however I believe you made an error in your caption
“Tyler, and Aryan Guard member takes part in New Years festivities, during a party thrown by the group.”

Should it not be either “Tyler, an Aryan Guard member[...]”
or “Tyler and Aryan Guard members[...]“

  4. Those aren’t skinheads. They’re boneheads. Skinheads aren’t racist. Other than that, it has potential to be really good.

  5. “Those aren’t skinheads. They’re boneheads. Skinheads aren’t racist. Other than that, it has potential to be really good.” - Skinhead

Actually no.. that isn’t true in the slightest. Traditional skinheads (as I assume you are pretending to be) was a youth cult primarily derived from the hard mods in ‘69. (ref. spirit of 69) While it is true that traditional skinheads had no expressed political connotation, save ultra-nationalism many of them still held to there own individual political beliefs etc. All a skinhead is (in reality) is a proud member of the working class with an ultra-nationalist mind set, particularly one who conforms to a certain dress type (eg. boots & braces, harrigtons, bombers, fred perry’s and ben shirmans)

A person holding there own racialist beliefs does not exclude them from being a skinhead. And while a good number of those who support the aryan guard (AG only has four actual members) do claim to be skinheads, should you check their site you will see that being a skinhead is not a pre-requisite to becoming a member of the Aryan Guard.

  8. Just for clarification and in case people are wondering, this is a private project that the NP is not involved in, right? Would we be correct to believe that you’re planning on giving them the first crack at it though? Thanks.

  10. jessie: that’s some pretty serious twisting of the history you got going on there. with skills like that you could make a name for yourself on the holocaust denial circuit.

but let’s address the actual history of skinheads, shall we? certainly, the original bootboys counted the mods as as one of their forerunners, but equally as important was the influx of jamaican rude boy culture to britain and the ska and rocksteady music they brought with them. the skinhead movement, from the get go, was a fusion of both white and black culture and music. not exactly the stuff of which a racist movement is made.

doubt me? why not ask jimmy pursey of sham 69. you can catch up with him when he plays rock against racism in britain this april.

and as for skinheads wearing “fred perrys and ben shermins(sic)”… i have never seen the ag wear any of these clothes. mostly it seems they all sport ratty tee shirts with racist slogans and suspenders as wide as seatbelts. here’s a pic of what i’m talking about:

photographic proof the ag are slobs. hint: the “proud working class” clean their kitchens from time to time.

  11. Thank you, moonstomp!

This article had no bad intentions I’m sure, but I believe there is neither rhyme nor reason not to research more thoroughly into what the skinhead culture is and the history behind it (Not just the neo-nazi, white power movement that people think it is all about)
With the internet around these days, there is no reason to ignore research into something such as this. It is offensive to the hard working people of the world that are part of this culture that disagree with the media-twisted definition of skinhead.
The skinhead culture was taken in by a select few white power/nationalist/neo-nazi types, but the more the media portrays skinheads as this without proper research and demeaning something that has survived as long as this has, is what keeps the general ‘Skinheads are neo-nazi’ thought pattern around.
Maybe people should mention the history a bit if they are going to throw this term around all carefree?

A true media-man that is proud of his work might dig a little deeper so that false messages are not spread, realizing that the basic human populace will not research on their own as ‘the media tells all.’

bc im hearing different things such as theyre an organization that takes pride in their heritage (but so does every culture/race out there) or some stuff dat says yea they are racist, they hate any other races and they want to kill all of them

I heard they just take pride as well. If that is the case, I have no problem with them. I’m proud of my heritage and I’m white… but I am not racist. I just happen to have a great family that has done well. The Nazi’s tried to kill us (meaning my family of Polish descent) and we survived… We must have done something right (or at least had some luck…) So I’m proud. Again, I’m white… And proud Haha Hate me?!
