“Runway”
“Fashion week is the time for the poor to look rich, and the rich to look- well they don’t care.”
Anonymous man overhead in the media room at Toronto Fashion Week.
Fashion inherently incorporates mass media, advertising, art and photography. It is in fact a summation of these forms. It is rooted in art through the creative process of design, with photography as the vehicle for it’s enormous presence in mass media and advertising. Fashion dictates what is in and what is out and how our society should look and even act on a grand scale.
Fashion Weeks, whether in Toronto, NY or Paris are the pinnacle for exhibition in the fashion industry, not only for the designers and models on the runway, but also for all those who simply wish to be seen. Photographers Aaron Vincent Elkaim and Brett Gundlock have been covering Toronto Fashion Week for the last three seasons documenting the event with their own unique approach. This exhibition will be a collaboration between the photographers, fusing their vision into a coherent show. Elkaim will show a series of portraits of models faces while sitting in hair and make-up. By blowing out the detail in their faces with a flash, Elkaim aims to expose what they are - simply canvasses to be shaped- Gundlocks work seems to ask if we are any different? His work shows a series of spectators walking down the runway through the spotlights, highlighting their fashion and the spectacle that they have become in their own right.
The work will be printed on 24×36” translucent prints. The prints will be hung from the ceiling, in a manner that has the viewer walk through the instillation, creating the feeling the motion that was present when these images where captured.
Brett Gundlock is a staff photographer for the National Post. Away from his daily work for the paper, he concentrates on personal work- focusing on class, race and religion. His work has been exhibited in last years Contact Photography Festival and at the Getty Images Gallery in London, England.
Aaron Vincent Elkaim is an award winning freelance photographer/photojournalist located in Toronto. His personal work is documentary photography with a cultural investment. He was recognized as one of Photolife Magazines Emerging Photographers in 2008.
